MaryCarmen Mejía, Director

Environmental Biologist | Sustainability and Biochar Expert

MaryCarmen Mejía, an expert in environmental management with a master’s in Environmental Science, has over a decade of experience bridging science, policy, and action. From 2012 to 2018, she served as General Director of Environmental Affairs for Salamanca and León, Guanajuato, spearheading initiatives in sustainable urban development and resource management.

In 2024, she led Mexico’s first verified biochar production for carbon credit certification with Puro Earth. As a sustainability consultant, Mejía develops plans focused on emissions measurement, traceability, and ecosystem restoration.

Specializing in biochar for soil recovery and waste management, she collaborates with academic, governmental, and private sectors to drive sustainable impact across Latin America.

Valeria Araico, Consultant in Process and Administrative Management

She brings over a decade of experience in NGO management, administrative coordination, and project management to her role as Administrative Consultant for the ILBI. With a strong background working with prominent organizations like Amnesty International, Population Council, Conservation International, and The Next 150, Valeria has honed her skills in managing administrative, operations, and HR functions at country-level offices. She excels in project management, ensuring effective execution through meticulous monitoring and coordination.

Her expertise, grounded in international relations and continuous professional development, has driven strategic initiatives and ensured smooth office operations across various organizations. Valeria’s passion for fostering positive change and collaborative environments shines through in her work.

Rafa Gamboa-Cardeña, Marketing Communications Consultant

Rafa is a designer and communications expert with over a decade of experience in social and environmental impact projects. As the Design Lead for ILBI, he integrates storytelling, visual strategy, and digital engagement to amplify biochar’s role in addressing environmental challenges. With a background in architecture and visual arts, Rafa has collaborated with NGOs, international brands, and sustainability initiatives, crafting impactful narratives that drive awareness and action across Latin America.

The ILBI Board of Directors provides strategic oversight and guidance, ensuring the organization stays true to its mission and vision.     Expert in agrifood supply chains having worked in soft commodity origination in Latam and Africa supplying multinational companies such as Nestle, Coca Cola, Walmart, Fuji Oil, Ecom, Cargill, Amazon, and Google.

    Andrés Chapa is the founder of Tierra Prieta Biochar in Mexico, a pioneering company dedicated to producing and promoting biochar as a sustainable solution for soil restoration and carbon sequestration. With extensive experience in agroforestry and regenerative agriculture, Andrés combines technical expertise with a passion for environmental innovation. His work focuses on advancing biochar applications to address climate change, improve soil health, and support sustainable farming practices across Latin America.

    He serves as Board Secretary at the Latin American Biochar Institute (ILBI). With his role at Puro.earth, the world’s leading marketplace for carbon removal credits, Daniel brings deep expertise in climate finance and sustainability. His work focuses on driving innovative solutions to combat climate change, fostering collaborations, and enabling scalable biochar projects. Daniel’s dedication to advancing carbon removal strategies aligns seamlessly with ILBI’s mission to promote biochar as a transformative tool for environmental and social impact in Latin America.

With extensive experience in biochar production and sustainable development, Luisa is a recognized leader in advancing biochar solutions globally. She combines technical expertise with a strategic vision to promote biochar as a catalyst for climate resilience and soil regeneration. As Treasurer, she leverages her financial acumen and industry insight to strengthen ILBI’s mission of fostering ethical, safe, and impactful biochar systems across Latin America.

Gertrudis brings invaluable expertise in applied research and community outreach, fostering practices that enhance soil health and climate resilience.
